So what makes a great reel?
Everyone in the industry has their own idea of what makes a fantastic reel. The most important piece of information is that the footage needs to be clear and professional looking, it needs to move at a nice pace, generally 3 minutes or less, and it should show some sort of range. If an actor is absolutely serious about his career, he should never edit his own reel, especially with consumer programs such as iMovie. It is no different than taking one's own headshot with an iPhone or digital camera. When creating a dynamic, eye-catching reel for each client, we use the checklist below as a great reference guide that was created after talking to a number of producers, directors, casting directors, and agents:
A fantastic reel...

A fantastic reel...
- is absolutely essential to have in your arsenal. A headshot is simply not enough anymore.
- should start and end with a punch.
- moves at a brisk pace, transitioning from scene to scene, and beat to beat keeping those watching engaged from beginning to end.
- showcases ONLY the very best and most honest moments.
- should be under 3 minutes in length unless it contains incredible scenes in well known productions and/or with celebrities.
- has clips strung together in just the right order that keeps pace while changing mood and tone from scene to scene.
- contains clips/scenes with no more than three actors including you to ensure the focus remains on your performance only.
- should be devoid of any poor image (ultra dim lighting) and audio (excess background noise) quality. This can easily swallow your performance thereby hindering any chance of industry from gauging your talents and may prompt them to simply move on to the next.
